How We Work With You

Step 1: Gather your required documents

You require one of these documents to register with Manitoba Start:

  • Permanent Resident Card
  • Record of Landing and passport

You require one of these documents for referrals to career, employment, and training services:

  • Permanent Resident Card
  • Record of Landing and passport
  • Work Permit and passport
  • Refugee Claim Document

Step 2: Visit Manitoba Start to register

a) Bring your required documents to our office (see Step 1).

b) Manitoba Start registration is a drop-in service. No appointment is needed. Come to our office in downtown Winnipeg any weekday to register. Our address is 271 Portage Avenue. Noon hour is busy so you may have to wait longer if you come at this time.

c) At our office, you will meet with a Manitoba Start intake advisor. Your advisor will:

  • Review your required documents
  • Talk with you about your personal situation to help identify your and your family’s immediate needs
  • Discuss your education, training, and employment experience, and your goals based on the career planning you did before moving to Manitoba
  • Refer you to free services to prepare for employment in Manitoba
  • Provide you with contact information for the settlement worker in your neighbourhood
  • Refer you to the appropriate free services from other organizations

Step 3: Receive free services

As a newcomer registered with Manitoba Start, you may receive the following free career and information services:

Employment preparation workshop and career coaching

  • Plan your career goals, create a resume, get help with your job search, learn about Canadian workplace culture and qualifications recognition, and practice for interviews

A referral to the Entry Program

  • Information and orientation about living and working in Manitoba

Employment-related services and events

  • Access to many free services and events, including job matching, career information sessions, hiring events, and networking with employers

A referral to Winnipeg English Language Assessment and Referral Centre (WELARC)

  • An assessment of your English language skills
  • Information about English as an Additional Language (EAL) programs to help you improve your English
